Workshop Summary:

With eight WPRA World Championships, two Hall of Fame inductions, and decades of coaching that have reached ropers around the world, Lari Dee Guy is one of the winningest ropers in history and one of breakaway’s biggest champions. Now she’s bringing her two-day Masterclass to Art of the Cowgirl. This clinic builds your run from the ground up, starting with the fundamentals and finishing in the arena.

Day 1: Groundwork

Build a solid foundation: your swing, your delivery, and the habits that make every run better.

Day 2: In the Arena

Put it all together on horseback and take your skills from the box to the flag. Live cattle will be used on day 2.

About Lari Dee Guy:

Lari Dee Guy grew up on her family’s ranch outside Abilene, Texas, with a rope in her hand before she could read. By nine, she was winning—and she didn’t stop, racking up 11 consecutive American Junior Rodeo Association world titles before moving on to claim two NIRA National Championships at Vernon Junior College and Texas Tech University.

Over the decades, she’s become one of the winningest ropers in history, with eight WPRA World Championships spanning breakaway roping, heading, and heeling, plus the WPRA All-Around World Championship in 2014. But her impact goes far beyond her own gold buckles. Lari Dee has been a driving force in advancing opportunities for women in rodeo—founding the “Rope Like A Girl” movement, producing events, and teaching clinics that have reached thousands of ropers across the U.S., Canada, Sweden, and Australia.

Her leadership has helped put breakaway roping on major stages, inspiring the next generation of ropers and proving women’s rodeo belongs in the spotlight. That influence has earned her induction into both the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame (2020) and the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame (2021). In 2025, the National Cowboy Museum and Hall of Fame awarded Guy the Tad Lucas Award for her contribution to the women of the Western industry.

Today, when she’s not competing, she’s training elite rope horses on her family’s 10,000-acre ranch and continuing her life’s work—building better horses, better ropers, and a stronger future for the sport she’s helped shape.

Lari Dee Guy is also Art of the Cowgirl’s 2027 Breakaway Roping Master. This is her second time bringing one of her elite clinics to Art of the Cowgirl’s annual event.

Workshop cancellations will be refunded until February 1. No refunds will be given for cancellations after February 1, 2027.

About Mary Ross Buchholz:

For over 25 years, art has been Buchholz’s devotion. Buchholz and her husband live and ranch in rural west Texas near the town of Eldorado. Coming from a pioneering ranching family who homesteaded in the early 1890s, she offers a glimpse of her daily ranch life through her paintings, sculpture and the most primitive of mediums, charcoal and graphite.

Buchholz relishes in creating the portrait, whether the subject is an animal or person. She enjoys subtly rendering the details, the different textures and the individual characteristics of her subjects. “I want my pieces to not only look real, but feel real. I’m always mindful of the subject’s personality and hope each piece is portrayed with honesty and simplicity. I am blessed that what I enjoy drawing is right here, out my backdoor”, as Buchholz often portrays her own family members and the animals raised on the ranch.

Buchholz has received numerous awards and participates in many museum shows across the country including the Night of Artists at the Briscoe Museum in San Antonio, the Small Works Great Wonders at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage museum in Oklahoma City, and the Coors Western Art Show in Denver.

9:00am-2:00pm

EXPERIENCE LEVEL:

COST: $350
Includes a complimentary 5-Day pass to Art of the Cowgirl 2027

Workshop cancellations will be refunded until February 1. No refunds will be given for cancellations after February 1, 2027.

Workshop Summary:

Drawing on more than 40 years in the Western industry, Judy Wagner in Riding for the Brand, helps participants build stronger brands, tell meaningful stories, and lead with purpose, using authentic storytelling and hands-on brand-building tools. Judy uses her discerning Ranch-Grown Logic, experienced practical wisdom tested by real life, in telling stories and in support of making strategy clear, memorable, and useful.

During this interactive four-hour workshop, participants will explore the connection between Brand Building, Storytelling, and Leadership in Motion.

At the center of the workshop, Judy shares valuable tools, including her Wheel of Influence, a real-world, repeatable framework that participants can return to again and again, leveraging purposeful storytelling and putting leadership into motion. Developed by Judy over decades in the Western industry, the Wheel of Influence is a valued tool as original as the philosophy behind it. Beginning with purpose at the hub, the heart of the brand, the Wheel helps participants examine the foundational elements that shape a strong, consistent, and meaningful brand.

Participants will also work through a customer-centered value exercise to better understand what your customers value. This insight becomes a foundation for stronger products, programs, communication, relationships, and connection.

From there, storytelling becomes the multiplier. Participants will discover how everyday experiences can become meaningful stories that motivate, engage, lead, and sell, turning experience into connections that are both valued and memorable, whether for a product, a brand, or a program.

Real-world examples, interactive exercises, and Judy’s signature DoWit (Do Whatever It Takes) philosophy bring the concepts to life.

Participants will leave with a workbook of practical tools, greater clarity, and a personal blueprint they can continue building from long after the workshop ends. Past attendees have described the experience as a turning point, walking away with a new way of seeing their brand, their story, and their leadership.

“Strong brand creates strong relationships. Strong relationship creates strong brands.” This is the wheel in motion.

Let’s ride!

Saddle Making Recipient Brittany McCracken

About Brittany McCracken:

Brittany was born and raised in Elko, NV and from a young age, she had a love for art, horses and the western lifestyle through 4H and local traditions. In her junior year of high school her family moved to her stepdad’s 5th generation ranch where she was able to participate in ranching. It opened her eyes to the many unseen seasons of ranching, only making her passion stronger.

Just after attending college at the University of Wyoming, Brittany decided her art needed a more useful outlet through leather craft. The ability to make functional artwork sparked a fire in her soul. It was also at this time that she spent her first summer at a remote cow camp in the Upper Green. Currently, Brittany is about to start her 8th season as a range rider. At camp she gets to spend time in her favorite mountains doing the things she loves; chasing cows on horseback and working her 5 Border Collies. She spends her free time tooling leather, drawing, and reading. During the winter she tries to be full time in her leather shop and day help on the family ranch where her very supportive husband, Quaid, and her live.

Rawhide Braiding Recipient Nicole Ulrich

About Nicole Ulrich:

Nicole Ulrich was born and raised in Switzerland and moved to Canada when she was 23. She is a horse trainer and farrier. She has been riding her horses and training horses in bosals and the two-rein for over 20 years. She has always appreciated well-made gear and had the desire to learn how to make it. Nicole started braiding in 2024 at the Art of the Cowgirl workshop with Bill and Teresa Black and continued practicing with Kangaroo lace at home. She is eager to learn more about making her own rawhide and turning it into pieces of art.

Breakaway Roping Recipient
Danyelle Boardman

About Danyelle Boardman:

Danyelle is a wife, mom of two wild little boys, and someone who finds a lot of purpose in building a life centered around family and hard work. Most days look like balancing kids, business, and everything in between for Danyelle—raising what she likes to call “feral children” while chasing goals and trying to stay present for it all.

She is drawn to a simple, western kind of lifestyle where you earn what you have, take care of your people, and don’t mind getting your hands dirty. She enjoys creating, whether that’s through business or just building something meaningful from the ground up.

Danyelle is always looking to grow, learn, and become better—not just for herself, but for her family. The Breakaway Fellowship feels like a good place for her to connect with others, be challenged, and stay focused on what really matters in the middle of a busy, full life.

Horsemanship Recipient Lizzie Kanetsky

About Lizzie Kanetsky:

Lizzie grew up in the mountains of Colorado and while did not grow up in a horse family, Lizzie was born to love the horse.  Through high school she worked as a groom for hunter jumper trainers, and managed a hippotherapy program.  Lizzie quickly found her passion when she went to Colorado State University, and began learning natural horsemanship methods to start colts for the Legends of Ranching Performance Horse Sale.  While majoring in Equine Sciences, Lizzie also competed for the CSU Versatility Ranch Horse Team and interned for the Bartlet Ranch, and Singleton Ranch.

After college Lizzie worked for Bill and Carole Smith, of the Wyo Quarter Horse Ranch.  Immersed in a world of training horses for the legendary Wyo Quarter Horse Sale. While in Wyoming Lizzie learned that horsemanship spans all disciplines, it crosses to every horse, and it is the basis of communicating with horses where the horse has every opportunity to find a fair deal.

Timing, balance and feel take a lifetime to learn, and Lizzie’s goal is to communicate these concepts to those who want a better experience with horses.  Lizzie has grown her herd of horses that she uses daily teaching horsemanship basics, and has always had the lifetime goal to be a student of the horse and share the power of horsemanship with all horse enthusiasts.

Through the horsemanship fellowship Lizzie hopes to bring to light her dream of owning and operating her own business focusing of breeding, training, sales and teaching horsemanship clinics.

Silver Recipient Dawn Cline

About Dawn Cline:

Building pieces that feel as at home in the arena as they do under neon lights is just what Dawn Cline does as a silversmith and hand engraver.  Her work blends traditional techniques with more bold, modern cowgirl edge–heavy sterling, turquoise, and stories you can wear.  Dawn didn’t come up in a family that was deeply rooted in the West or its traditions; she built her craft with her own two hands, learning through doing, failing, and refining until her style became unmistakably hers.

It took Dawn years because she couldn’t afford the tools to chase that dream until middle age.  Up until that time, she had pencils and paper.  When she finally began working with silver, it was like coming home and she hasn’t left since.  Being selected as a silversmith fellow for Art of the Cowgirl is both an honor and a full circle moment for Dawn.  This community represents everything she values–heritage, hard work, determination, and women who show up with skill and grit.  She is here to deepen her craft, push designs further, and carry forward the legacy of Western silversmithing in a way that feels authentic to her voice and the women who wear her work.

Fine Art Recipient Jenni Stoll

About Jenni Stoll:

Guided by her faith and a deep love for the American West, Jenni is a Wyoming-based artist and professional taxidermist dedicated to honoring the beauty of the natural world. Raised on a small, self-sufficient farm, she learned early on that a purposeful life starts with God, and is lived out through hard work and care for the animals that sustain us. Today, she carries those values to the canvas, where she blends the technical precision of her taxidermy background with the expressive depth of fine art.

For Jenni, Western art is a tribute to the integrity of a wilder era of frontier reverence and raw opportunity. It preserves a time when the horizon felt limitless and life was defined by the land, before plastic and the corporate age. By capturing the grit and resonance of her subjects, she seeks to document a heritage and unwritten history of the West.

Ultimately, Jenni strives to be a faithful steward of her gift, creating sentimentalized works that serve as a testament to the enduring spirit of the frontier. Her goal is to ensure that the beauty of God’s creation and the “original American dream” are forever admired and carried on.

Fine Art with Mary Ross Buchholz

About Mary Ross Buchholz:

For over 25 years, art has been Mary Ross Buchholz’s devotion.  Born and raised in west Texas, she brings preservation and an authentic portrayal of the American West to life.  Buchholz and her husband live and ranch along with their three adult sons in a rural west Texas near the town of Eldorado.  Coming from a pioneering ranching family that homesteaded in the early 1890s, Buchholz offers a glimpse of her daily ranch-life primarily with the use of charcoal and graphite, the most primitive of mediums.  She enjoys sculpting and painting, as well, and has been honing her skills since her childhood.

With an affinity for anatomy and the sciences, Buchholz received an Animal Science degree from Texas A&M University in the early 1990’s.  Taking a different direction than originally planned by deciding not to follow in her father’s footsteps as a veterinarian, she envisioned returning to the ranch to raise a family instead.

With toddlers under foot and feeling the need to create, Buchholz, with the encouragement of her mother, embarked upon an amazing art journey.  All in all, it allowed her to have a career while staying at home with her young children.

Buchholz relishes in creating the portrait, whether the subject is an animal or a person.

Buchholz has received numerous awards and participates in many museum shows across the country including the Night of Artists at the Briscoe Museum in San Antonio, TX, the Small Works Great Wonders at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage museum in Oklahoma City, OK, and the Coors Western Art Show in Denver CO.  Her most recent honors include the Small Works Great Wonders art show 2024 Cynthia Post Memorial Directors’ Choice Award at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, the Briscoe Western Art Museum 2023 Night of Artists “William B. Travis Patrons’ Choice Award” and the 2023 Academy of Western Artists “Artist of the Year” award.  She is represented by InSight Gallery in Fredericksburg, TX and Broadmoor Galleries in Colorado.

Saddle Making with Nancy Martiny

About Nancy Martiny:

Nancy Martiny is a second-generation leatherworker and fourth-generation rancher from Idaho.

Following in her father’s footsteps, who made purses, belts and wallets for friends and family (and eventually built himself a saddle), Nancy learned the basics of carving leather from him while in high school. She was soon making belts for friends, and a lifelong passion was born.

In 1987, Nancy received two saddle trees as a gift from her husband, and had the great honor of receiving lessons from Master Saddlemaker Dale Harwood. Armed with a notebook, she would visit Dale’s shop over the course of several months to observe his work and receive guidance from the master.

After building the first saddle for herself, and the next one for her kids, she started getting orders from friends, and a thirty-year career began. She continued her education over the years by attending workshops and studying the work of past and current masters of the art.

Nancy has always worked from her home shop, while simultaneously raising her family and helping with the family rodeo business and ranch. She currently lives with her husband, Jim, on their 130-year-old family ranch, where they raise beef cattle and enjoy passing their knowledge on to their grandchildren.

In 2025, Nancy was inducted into the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame.

Breakaway with Lari Dee Guy

Today, when she’s not competing, she’s training elite rope horses on her family’s 10,000-acre ranch and continuing her life’s work—building better horses, better ropers, and a stronger future for the sport she’s helped shape.

Rawhide with Bill Ferreira

About Bill Ferreira:

Bill Ferreira Jr grew up on the Big Island of Hawaii immersed in the rich ranching culture of the Paniolo (Hawaiian Cowboy). Listening and learning from the elders fostered a love of good gear. Rawhide was (and still is) the medium that spoke to him, and Bill has been consistently working towards improving for close to 30 years now.

Bill currently works out of his home shop in East Helena, Montana. Building all kinds of rawhide gear, from reatas and romals to bosals and jewelry. He is drawn to the intricate rawhide work, the more tedious and fine pieces truly gets the creativity going, all while maintaining the proper functionality. He truly enjoys teaching and sharing all that he can of the art, continuously experimenting and learning to improve his work.

Intermediate

COST: $497
*Limited to 6 Participants
*Lunch is included both days

No refunds will be given for cancellations after October 1st, 2025.

Workshop Summary:

This workshop will teach you how to draw Sheridan style floral designs directly onto leather. No need to sketch it out beforehand, I will show you a step-by-step method to make this process easier than you’ve imagined. This method has been taught to me in various ways by several leather masters that I have then modified to my own style. I hope to break down the process into a two-day drawing and tooling class. I will teach you how to use tap off flowers, plan out your layout, fill space, connect circles, and the proper swivel knife and tooling order to maximize depth.

Day one will be spent learning the method as I present all the information to the class. We will practice drawing and if time allows, get to tooling as soon as possible. I want to emphasize repetition of each step so we will be going back over each step and then practicing that step as we go. Let’s make lots of mistakes so we can learn how to fix them while having fun! This is an intermediate level class (some past drawing/tooling experience).

About Kristin Allen:

I was born and raised in a small ranching community in southwest Colorado. I grew up around ranching and always had an interest in horses. That is what started my journey with leather work—the desire to make my own working gear. I spent a lot of my early years cowboying for various outfits, shoeing horses, as well as training and selling horses. I slowly picked up a few leather pointers from fellow cowboys along the way, borrowing and eventually buying a few tools here and there. I spent many hours alone in whatever bunkhouse I was living in teaching myself the leather craft. I started selling items online which eventually turned into a business. As the years went by and the demand for my art increased, I invested in better tools and sought out classes to improve my skills.

Now, I do leather work full time and cowboying is my side hustle. My background cowboying shaped my style as an artist today and I am so grateful for the journey it has taken me on. I still enjoy making working cowboy gear with an emphasis on an artistic flair. With every piece I make I try to document the working cowboy and my love for that culture.

Bit & Spur Making with Guest Master Kim Parkey

Kim Parkey has been building bits and spurs for the past 30 years.  His passion is bridle bits and his main goal is to build a bit that is functional first and beautiful second.  He is also committed to sharing his knowledge of bit making with others.  Before retiring to full-time bit making, Kim was a welder/fabricator at New Mexico State University, heading up the welding and machine shop in the Mechanical Engineering Department. Kim was featured in the August 2016 edition of Western Horseman Magazine.  He was awarded the People’s Choice award three years running at the Great Basin Gear Show in Elko, Nevada, on collaboration pieces with outstanding rawhide braider Bret Haskett. Kim lives near Elgin, Arizona with his wife, Karen, and a couple of horses.

Beading with Master Kathleen Brannon

Kathleen Brannon is a Bead Artist living in the Northern Nevada High Desert.   Her work maintains the integrity of color and symbolism used by the Ancients in Petroglyphs and in Ceremonies. Kathleen simply transforms the symbols into contemporary form. Each piece is personally designed and handcrafted.  Sheets of aluminum are sheared into strips, bent, then covered in natural hide.  Once the bead work is completed, it is handstitched to the basic cuff.

Raised in the Southwest, her passion and respect for the wide open spaces of the Western lands and its simple lifestyle became her passion.  As a Non-Native, she has lived near Tribal Lands and had the fortunate opportunity to learn beadwork from many Navajo Elders.

Leather/Chap Making with Master Julie Baugher

Lisa Barnes’ journey in the horse industry began in Southern California during her childhood, when she worked at a pony ride and petting zoo. Under the mentorship of the owner, Linda Menary, Lisa learned not only the values of hard work but also the importance of living with passion. Linda’s zest for life and dedication to helping others inspired Lisa to embrace challenges, roll up her sleeves, get dirty and enjoy every moment of your life.

Lisa’s career in the horse industry has lead her into a wide variety of roles, primarily in Alaska. She became a farrier after learning how to shoe horses out of necessity, eventually attending the Kentucky Horse Shoeing School. Lisa’s deep understanding of the equine world continued to grow as she managed the Soldotna Rodeo Grounds, organizing and producing events for the local community.

In the mid-1980s, Lisa worked as an outfitter in Alaska, where she packed hunters and tourists into remote camps with their gear and supplies, and later packed out their hunted game. Through these rugged years, and an education in the school of hard knocks, Lisa learned valuable lessons, especially the importance of preparation and safety. By reaching out to experienced guides, learning proper knot-tying, saddle and pad fitting and training animals before putting hunted game on their backs for the first time, she was able to make life safer with less disasters.

Today, Lisa is a Certified Equine Dentist, offering her expertise to ensure the health and well-being of horses. For recreation, she enjoys team roping, participating in wagon trains with her team and wagon, packing and trail riding and working her stock dogs. Lisa is honored to be returning as a presenter and participant at the Art of the Cowgirl event, where she continues to share her knowledge and passion for the equine world.

Lisa’s commitment to both the art and science of horsemanship, combined with her adventurous spirit, makes her a truly inspiring figure in the horse community.

Hat Making with Master Shorty Koger

Born in 1945 in Oklahoma City, Shorty, given name “Lavonna,” spent most of her youth in the tiny community of Fairfax in Oklahoma’s northeastern Osage County. Shorty got her first horse when she was a teenager. She taught herself to ride bareback, eventually galloping into the world of barrel racing and bull riding. Although Shorty worked the rodeo circuit, earning a name for herself as a fearless rider and for her never-say-die spirit, she struggled to find a career that would fulfill her cowboy dreams. She ran a Western store for a while, helped a friend start a Subway sandwich shop, and ponied horses up the starting line at the horse races at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds raceway.

“Honestly, I was obsessed with cowboy culture,” Shorty says. “My love was always with the Western lifestyle.”

After Shorty’s father died in the 1970s, her brother sent off two of her father’s cowboy hats to be renovated and cleaned. “When my brother got those hats back and they were ruined, he told me ‘As much as you love rodeos, you ought to get in the hat-cleaning business.’ It was like a bolt of lightning. I said, ‘Holy cow. What a great idea!” Like everything else in her life, Shorty learned the art of hat renovation and creation by trial and error.

Shorty now owns and runs Shorty’s Caboy Hattery in Oklahoma City and travels throughout the country to massive shows and competitions. Each of Shorty’s hats starts out with quality beaver and rabbit fur from Ukraine. Each custom hat takes at least five days to make, but the handcrafted effort pays off. In Shorty’s eyes, everybody who wears one of her hats is a celebrity.

“Sit tall in the saddle. Hold your head up high. Keep your eyes fixed where the trail meets the sky.” – Chris LeDoux

Rooted in Western values, Judy Wagner draws on over 40 years of experience in the Western industry, using authentic storytelling to build trust, inspire action, and create lasting connections.

This workshop is inspired by the Western tradition of Riding for the Brand, standing for something greater than yourself, giving your best, and leading with shared values and purpose. At its heart are three pillars: Brand Building, Storytelling, and Leadership in Motion.

Participants will explore the importance of a well-structured Brand Building strategy, review a model plan, analyze its components, and engage in customer assessments to create a personal Value-Added Model.

“People don’t buy what we do. They buy why we do it. Demographics don’t buy products, emotions do.” Through a customer-centered Value Model exercise, participants will uncover their customers’ emotional needs, gaining insights and practical tools to build a brand worth talking about.

Value Models highlight what matters most to customers. With this clarity comes awareness, focus, and the ability to magnify storytelling through a Value-Based Model. These insights become foundational, whether launching new products, creating programs, or strengthening existing brands. They shape perceptions, align teams, and create lasting impact.

Why does this matter? Because storytelling is essential to building a dynamic, authentic brand. It serves as a multiplier, elevating our ability to motivate, sell, inspire, engage, and lead.

The workshop includes the Nice Job, Cowgirl Workbook: Brand Building, Storytelling & Leadership in Motion, designed to support participants in building their brands, products, or services.

This hands-on, practical approach is guided by Judy’s “Ranch-Grown Logic” and emphasizes crafting brand-building tactics through her Wheel of Influence tool, a wagon wheel metaphor spotlighting key cornerstones of brand strength and purpose-driven leadership. Participants will also be introduced to Judy’s signature leadership mantra, DOWIT, Do Whatever It Takes, a practical guide for action, clarity, and impact.

At the end of the workshop, attendees will leave with a personalized blueprint, ready to implement on their journey toward purposeful leadership, value-added branding, and Leadership in Motion.

Let’s ride!

Pages 360–361: Gaucho knot of the one pass

Pages 390–391: Additional knot details

Pages 420–423: Pineapple knot

Please study, and practice these knot-tying techniques beforehand will prepare you for the workshop. To help with your knot tying you can use kangaroo leather and you’re going to need an awl and flat leather sewing needles.

About Teresa Black:

Teresa Black started braiding and hitching horsehair when she met her husband, Bill, in 2000. He taught her how to work rawhide and hitch horsehair. She previously lived in Lakeside, California, where she helped her father, Denny Bryan, at his saddle shop—building saddles and performing repair work on saddle gear and other items.

Today, Teresa lives in the small town of Plush, Oregon, with her husband and their daughter, Montana. They operate their workshop right on their property, where they craft all of their work. Teresa also enjoys riding her horse; she and Montana participate in jackpot barrel racing, and Teresa competes in reined cow horse events. The family frequently attends local brandings—Bill ropes, Montana helps handle the calves, and Teresa assists by flanking calves and setting heel ropes.

Teresa enjoys making hackamores and hitching horsehair bracelets. She often crafts custom bracelets using hair provided by clients from their own horses, creating meaningful keepsakes to remember their companions.

They prepare all of their own rawhide using natural methods, never applying chemicals to remove the hair. Teresa and Bill build their gear specifically to be functional and durable—braiding for the working horse world rather than for show.

Their shop door is always open to anyone interested in seeing how traditional gear is made.

Workshop cancellations will be refunded until February 1. No refunds will be given for cancellations after February 1, 2027.

Students will leave with words on paper and learn a foolproof exercise to bust through writer’s block and ensure future progress.

About Jolyn Young:

Jolyn Young lives on a ranch in the mountains of southern California with her cowboy husband and their three feral cowkids. She started writing as a child and never shook the habit. Jolyn used written words to connect with others when she worked on the cowboy crew and later as she traveled around with her husband to his ranch jobs. She started a blog in 2010 that reached dozens of people and was the staff writer on a ranching magazine for five years. Today, she writes a monthly humor column for Western Horseman and is the author of Never Burn Your Moving Boxes, a memoir about her life on big cow outfits.

Workshop cancellations will be refunded until February 1. No refunds will be given for cancellations after February 1, 2026.
