Photo Retreat during Art of the Cowgirl Event
Spend 3 days with 2 professional equine photographers! Learn professional techniques for photographing events and the process of working with and photographing horses, models, and candid images alongside Phyllis and Kim. In addition to photography techniques, you will also learn about the business of being a professional equine photographer!
This retreat is limited to only 4 participants. It will include a three- day press pass to Art of the Cowgirl where you will be one of the event photographers while learning from Kim and Phyllis. All photographs taken during the retreat will be with Art of the Cowgirl to be utilized for marketing which will be an advantage for getting your name out there for your photography business.
Registration for this retreat will also get you a spot in the Thursday Photo Editing workshop with Kim and Phyllis January 23rd at the John Volken Academy Ranch.
All experience levels welcome.
Each participant is responsible for travel and lodging for this retreat.

About Kim Beer
Kimberly Beer has been a professional equine photographer for over 30 years. She has a wide background in multiple breeds and disciplines as well as extensive commercial photography experience in the equine industry. Kim is best known for her imagery that illustrates the healing bond between horses and humans. Her images are featured on many websites, advertisements, and editorials that focus on the horse-human healing movement. Her work has been published in Horse and Rider, Equus, Equine Wellness and many other publications. Kim’s images have been highly awarded in numerous photography contests across the nation and internationally.
When she’s not behind the camera, Kim is a business and photography mentor and instructor. She is fluent in digital photography software and regularly teaches Adobe Lightroom courses to both new and experienced digital photographers. In the autumn of 2019, Kim will begin teaching Photoshop and Lightroom 3 day intensives in her home city of Kansas City through a local training agency. She plans to launch a Lightroom and Photoshop mastery online course in 2020 focused on using these powerful tools to manage and grow business marketing as well as creativity.
Kim co-leads several equine photography retreats centered around Western/Cowboy/Cowgirl lifestyle workshops each year. She is truly in her element when staging setups for the photography retreat participants. In addition to being a photographer, Kim is an Entrepreneurial Strategist who helps small businesses grow through her philosophy of Sustainable Entrepreneurship. She is a sought after speaker, instructor, and inspirational leader in the small business community. Kim is a member of the Equine Photographers Network (EPNet) and The Professional Photographers Association (PPA).
Phyllis began photography in 2003 with a focus on Nature and Wildlife. She was part owner and manager of Burchett Equine Center for over 30 years so it was only natural for her to turn to equine photography. As a professional horse trainer, Phyllis’ horses and clients won numerous world and national titles along with yearend high point awards. She was the breeding manager standing up to 14 stallions each year, managing the collection and breeding operation and overseeing the mares foaling. Her knowledge of horses helps her to fulfill her creative vision. Her passion for beautiful light and candid moments inspires and fuels her to make images that make the viewer want to come along on her journey.
Phyllis’s photography has been recognized in many venues, winning many awards both nationally and internationally. She has been published in Western Horseman, Cowboys and Indians Magazine, the Appaloosa Journal, Horse and Rider Magazine, the Equestrian Magazine of China, HORSEMANSHIP, Sport and Trail Magazine, Inner Reflections Calendar, Natures Best Photography Magazine, Expressions Magazine (NANPA), and Seascapes with Better Photo. She has also been featured on ViewBug, LandscapePhotographerMagazine.com, The Framed Network, Equestrian Stylist, the RockN W Report, DTown (KelbyTV.com) with Rafael “RC” Concepcion and FemWorld View Magazine.
Phyllis is represented by Poems Art Publishing, The World Art Group and Arcangel-Images. Her work is currently featured at the Booth Western Art Museum and The Fence in Cartersville, Georgia. Phyllis currently hosts Equine Photo Workshops in Florida, Georgia, Utah, Virginia and Wyoming. She leads an Equine Photo Tour to Iceland each year along with hosting a Ladies Photo/Ride Tour to a new location each year.
