During this workshop, Kathryn will share her process from inspiration to the finished colored pencil drawing on sanded paper. Each student will be provided all of the materials needed to complete a 8” x 10” horse portrait and 2 days of instruction with the artist.

Briefly covered subjects will be:

inspiration
reference material
tools
surface prep
composition
drawing

Then, practice strips will allow for time to explore:

pressure
coverage
blending techniques
removal of color

Finally, the bulk of the 2 days will be spent on the drawing itself. Students will learn color blocking, layering, blending and finishing techniques. There will be time to work at each stage of the drawing and, even though colored pencil is a patient process and the drawing will not be complete, however, the student will leave with the tools and skills to finish the drawing.
